Reflecting on our history: The CCGS Pierre Radisson maiden voyage through the Northwest Passage in 1978
To celebrate the ÍæÔ˲ʼ´Ê±±È·Ö's 60th anniversary, we have been reflecting on our rich history throughout the years. We invited CCG retirees to share some anniversary related stories, and André Bégin, former Radio Officer on the CCGS Pierre Radisson, answered the call! Below, you will find his personal notes from the inaugural trip of the CCGS Pierre Radisson in 1978.

André Bégin’s personal journal entries
July 1978
- July 10, 10h local time: Departure from Esquimalt, British Columbia for Point Barrow and Western Arctic.
- July 17: Transiting the Bering Strait, crossing Arctic Circle.
- July 29: Speed of 5 knots in completely intact ice (3 to 5 feet thick); bound for Cambridge Bay.

August 1978
- August 1-3: Stopped in the unbroken ice in the outer part of Cambridge Bay to make repairs to damaged machinery and equipment following several days of difficult ice breaking.
- August 10: Speed of 3 knots in the Icebreaker Channel to Resolute Bay in very closely packed ice, via Larsen Sound and Peel Sound.
- August 12: Making very slow progress towards Larsen Sound in severe ice conditions. Made only 5 miles yesterday. Hope to make use of some cracks which appear to lead northeastward today.

- August 13: Making very slow progress in heavy ice concentration. Made it 8 miles yesterday. Forced to halt by pressure twice.
- August 16: We are in the consolidated ice pack of several years, completely intact. Further advancement is impossible without fracturing the ice and causing a break-up. Ice thickness around the ship is 12 feet. Attempts to break the ice by pushing the ship forward as far as possible repeatedly, backing up and repeating the maneuver yield negligible results and is too dangerous for the ship.
- August 17: Returning to Cambridge Bay making very slow progress in very severe ice conditions. Took 7 hours to turn ship around and made 1 mile progress since.
- August 20: Making slow progress southwestwards in Victoria Strait in very heavy ice conditions.

- September 3: In open water, bound for Resolute Bay via Prince of Wales Strait.
- September 4: Clear of north-end Prince of Wales Strait, bound for north side Viscount Melville Sound on way to Resolute Bay. Excellent progress in mostly open water in strait.
- September 6: Stopped in very closely pack first year ice. Waiting for fog to clear before continuing passage towards Resolute Bay. Passed CCGS John A Macdonald yesterday. Mutual aid not required, so continued onward direction stop air minus 8.
