Engine room assistant
Engine room assistants help provide operational and custodial services for the engine room. They are also known as oilers.
Duties
Some of an engine room assistant’s duties are:
- cleaning and caring for:
- machinery
- equipment
- machinery spaces
- inspecting machinery and equipment
- participating in the engine room watch, which includes monitoring the engine room for any issue
- assisting in:
- operating, maintaining and repairing machinery and equipment
- fueling
- handling oil products
- doing lube oil transfers
- transferring, testing and treating potable water
Like all crew members, engine room assistants also participate in:
- firefighting operations
- evacuation procedures
- emergency and safety drills
- search and rescue and environmental response and drills
Requirements
To apply for an engine room assistant position, you must have experience in one of the following:
- maintaining and repairing
- machinery or
- mechanical equipment or
- electrical equipment or
- welding
- other similar skilled or industrial trades

Engine room technician
Engine room technicians keep our engine rooms running smoothly. They do:
- repairs
- maintenance
- storekeeping
Duties
Some of an engine room technician’s duties are:
- maintaining engine room inventory
- keeping machinery maintenance records and engine room logs up to date
- performing watchkeeping duties in the engine room
- assisting in:
- ordering tools and maintaining supplies
- planning equipment and systems maintenance, including deck machinery and life rafts
- operating, maintaining and inspecting the ship’s engines and machinery
Like all crew members, engine room technicians also participate in:
- firefighting operations
- evacuation procedures
- emergency and safety drills
- search and rescue and environmental response operations and drills
Requirements
To apply for an engine room technician position, you must have a valid:
- Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers – Marine Emergency Duties (STCW MED) Basic Safety certificate
- Transport Canada Engine Room Rating certificate
- Marine Emergency Duties with respect to proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats

Engineering officer
Engineering officers help operate and maintain the ship’s:
- machinery
- engine room
- auxiliary and mechanical equipment, like the onboard water management system
Duties
Some of an engineering officer’s duties are:
- operating, maintaining and repairing the ship’s:
- main engines
- mechanical systems
- auxiliary and deck machinery
- updating:
- oil record books
- engine room logs
- machinery maintenance records
- helping to supervise and train engineering crew assigned to the ship’s watchkeeping system
Like all crew members, engineering officers also participate in:
- firefighting operations
- evacuation procedures
- emergency and safety drills
- search and rescue and environmental response operations and drills
Requirements
To apply for an engineering officer position, you must have a valid Transport Canada Fourth-class marine engineering certificate or higher.

Senior engineering officer
With help from the rest of the engine room team, senior engineering officers operate and maintain our ship’s engines and machinery. They also help supervise and coordinate the rest of the engine room team.
Duties
Some of a senior engineering officer’s duties are:
- supervising the engine room’s and ship machinery’s daily:
- operations
- maintenance
- repair
- recommending and assisting with vessel:
- repair
- alterations
- refit
- advising the ship’s chief engineer
- supervising and training engineering crew assigned to the ship’s watchkeeping system
Like all crew members, senior engineering officers also lead or participate in:
- firefighting operations
- evacuation procedures
- emergency and safety drills
- search and rescue and environmental response operations and drills
Requirements
To apply for a senior engineering officer position, you must have a valid Transport Canada Third-class marine engineering certificate or higher.
